Dubai has grown in a few decades into a big city with many attractions and sights, but when you think about Dubai you probably don’t immediately think of museums. Nevertheless, there are a number of, especially small, museums in Dubai that are certainly worth a visit. And when stay a bit longer in Dubai you can easily go on a day trip to Abu Dhabi, where you will find branches of the appealing museums Guggenheim and Louvre.

The Dubai museum and the Al Fahidi fort

The most famous museum in Dubai is the Dubai museum in Bur Dubai near the Dubai creek. This museum is best known for the historic Al Fahidi fort that you can visit as part of this museum. In the Al Fahidi fort you can see historical weaponry, musical instruments, boats and a house made of palm leaves. You can also walk on the walls of the fort to enjoy the view. The Dubai museum has a large exhibition underground, where you can learn a lot about the history of Dubai and how Dubai has grown from a fisherman’s place to the current metropolis. The Dubai museum is also good fun for kids!

Museums in Al Bastakiya

In the vicinity of the Dubai museum you will find several other small museums. A bit further down in the historic Al Fahidi district, you will find old houses, where nowadays shops, restaurants and also two museums are located. One of those museums is the Coffee Museum, where you can learn everything about coffee from all over the world. You can see how coffee is made and you can see coffee mills from different countries. You can also drink a cup of coffee at the Coffee Museum! Perhaps the best thing about the museum is that you can take a look inside a historic house and you can take some beautiful pictures here. The coffee museum is free and fun to walk in if you are in Al Bastakiya. The other museum you will find in Al Bastakiya is the Coins museum. In this museum you will find many showcases divided over two floors with old coins from Egypt, Iraq, Turkey and of course the United Arab Emirates. This museum is also free and you can just walk in. On the other side of the Dubai creek you will find the Pearl museum. In this museum you will learn the history of pearl fishing and in addition to pearls you can also see the tools that the pearl fishermen used. However, this museum can only be visited by appointment.

Museum of the Future

The Museum of the Future is currently being constructed and is expected to open at the end of 2019. The Museum of the Future focuses on innovation and you can see smart inventions in the areas of health, education, smart cities, energy and transport. In the museum you can see in advance what you will probably encounter later in real life. Think of applications of artificial intelligence, blockchain, robotics and much more.

To the Guggenheim and Louvre museums in Abu Dhabi

If you are a big fan of art, you can visit a branch of the Louvre from Paris in Abu Dhabi not far from Dubai. In the Louvre you will find artworks from all over the world, including works from the Louvre Paris, Center Pompidou, Musee D’Orsay and Versailles. You can see art made by Vincent van Gogh and Leonardo Da Vinci, but the museum also shows art from the Middle East. The intention is that the Guggenheim museum from New York will also open a branch in Abu Dhabi. The construction has already started but the opening date is still unknown at the moment.
