Dubai was built within a few decades and became a metropolis. But Dubai used to be just a small fishing village. When you’re done shopping, it’s worth visiting the Dubai Museum in the old city center. Here you will learn everything about the history of Dubai to better understand the city. A visit to the Dubai Museum is also a chance to see the Al Fahidi Fort. You don’t need to skip this museum because of money because unlike the new attractions in Dubai, visiting Dubai Museum is almost free.
When you enter the Dubai Museum, you will find yourself in a courtyard of the Al Fahidi Fort. Here you will find a number of historic boats and you can see how people live in the desert. In a house made of palm fronds, you can see the living room, a bedroom and the kitchen. A collection of ancient weapons and musical instruments is on display in the corridors of Al Fahidi Fort. It is also possible to tour the walls of the fortress and enjoy the views.
The best part of the Dubai Museum can be found in the air-conditioned basement. Here you can learn more about pearl fishing, the activity of Dubai’s original inhabitants. The pearls were exchanged for other goods from other countries, such as spices and clothing, at the markets along Dubai Creek. These goods were transported by dhow boats, which are now mainly used for tourist tours. The story is illustrated through life-like puppets, which is why the Dubai Museum is a lot of fun for children. There is also a section for desert animals. Finally, there is a part of the museum where archaeological excavations are exhibited, such as pots and bowls. When you leave the museum there is a museum shop where you can buy all sorts of Dubai souvenirs. But you can probably get the same souvenirs for much cheaper in the souks.
The Dubai Museum is located in Bur Dubai in the old city center near Dubai Creek. A visit to the Dubai Museum can be perfectly combined with a visit to the Old Souk in Bur Dubai, where you can buy very nice souvenirs. Another interesting attraction in Bur Dubai is the Al Fahidi district, also called Al Bastakiya. In this historic area you can walk through a maze of streets and you can take an abra (water taxi) to cross to Deira and visit the Spice Souk and the Gold Souk.
